We are delighted to be going back to York. You will notice the University has changed its name and is now York St John University. Bookends and the Library will not be able to attend this time.
Our Special Guest
Román Díaz has been a guest at Origami Conventions all over Europe, in Chile, and most recently in New York, so the BOS is delighted that he has accepted its invitation to be the Convention guest at the ‘original’ York this year! Román comes from Montevideo, Uruguay, where he was born in 1968, but he also lived as a child in Argentina, Honduras and Mozambique, and most recently spent 4 years living in Calgary, Canada. He is a Veterinary Surgeon by profession, a calling that shines through in the vitality that is so evident in many of his animal designs.
His origami spans many topics and all difficulty levels, from simple models like his Panda to complex items such as his Singing Cardinal. Two things that make his work particularly remarkable are his ability to represent the true essence of his subject, and to do so with much less manipulation of the paper than the vast majority of other creators around the world.
Román is also a very charming and approachable teacher who is more than willing to share his ideas and his skills with everyone. He is largely self-taught and came to the attention of the Origami world thanks to him showcasing his early designs on the Internet. In fact the BOS first published some of his work in the BO Magazine early in 2004. He has written two origami books to date, in which he has demonstrated the extraordinary feeling he has for his main subject matter of wildlife, but which also hint at how much more there is to come from this highly talented creator.
Volunteers
The programme organiser would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to teach a new or favourite design, or if you feel you can contribute to the convention in any way. For example, you could offer to help in the supplies shops, to arrange the exhibition table, to teach models, to prepare paper for folding, to give a talk or lecture, to teach children to fold, etc.
If you have any model instruction diagrams (if someone else's design, please obtain their permission beforehand), which you would like to be considered for the convention programme and the model collection, please send these to Tung Ken Lam. Any creator whose model is selected for the model collection will receive a complimentary CD copy as a token of our thanks.
